People often assume that curating a handbag collection is mostly about taste — that we see a beautiful bag, fall for it, and bring it in. Taste matters, of course. But behind every piece we choose is a quieter, more deliberate process, and it runs in a specific order.
Maison De Madisse is a curated brand, not a design house. We do not sketch or make our bags; we search for them, evaluate them, and approve only the ones that meet our standards. Over the years, that evaluation has settled into four things we look for, always in the same sequence.
Here is what a bag has to earn before it joins the collection.
One — A Detail That Makes Us Look Twice
The very first thing we look for is a standout detail. Not something loud or large, but something distinctive — the small touch that lifts a piece out of the ordinary.
It might be a beautifully made buckle, an interesting yet functional shape, or contrast stitching set against the leather. These details are subtle, but they are what give a bag its own quiet character rather than a generic one.
If a piece has nothing that makes us pause and look again, it rarely goes further. Everything else can be right, but without that spark, it is simply not distinctive enough.
Two — A Shape That Will Still Feel Right in a Few Years
The second thing we weigh is longevity of design. A bag can be current — we want it to be — but it cannot be so tied to a passing trend that it looks dated within a season.
The standard we hold is simple: any trend element has to sit on top of a shape that is classic enough to remain beautiful for years. On-trend today is welcome; out of style by spring is not.
This is where a lot of appealing pieces fall away. Something can be genuinely lovely right now and still fail this test, and when it does, we let it go.
Three — It Has to Actually Work
Third, we look at function. A bag has to earn its place in a real life, not just in a photograph, so we consider how it carries and how much it genuinely holds.
We pay close attention to how a bag's capacity compares to how it looks. With smaller shapes especially, a slightly wider base can let a compact bag hold far more than you would expect — a detail we actively seek out.
Ease of access and thoughtful interior organization matter here too. A beautiful bag that is frustrating to actually use has not really done its job.

Four — Color, Considered Last
Only once a piece has cleared the first three tests do we think about color. It comes last for a reason: a beautiful color cannot rescue a bag that fell short on detail, shape, or function.
Our collection always keeps a core of neutrals — cream, taupe, black, camel, and the full range of browns. This fall, brown is where our attention keeps landing, espresso brown in particular: a deep, warm near-black that has become one of the season's defining shades. It reads richer and softer than black, pairs with nearly everything, and feels current in a way that will still look right seasons from now.
Beyond that core, we consider both soft and bold tones, and a simple, understated pattern can earn its place — it's the excessive or extremely bold ones we tend to skip, since they rarely last more than a season. Solid color and texture simply age better and stay wearable far longer.
The Same Standard for Every Piece
What might surprise people is that this sequence does not change from one part of the collection to another. A leather piece and a suede one, a structured tote and a small evening bag — each has to earn its place the same way.
We buy in small batches on purpose, and that discipline is part of why we can hold the line. When you are choosing a limited number of pieces rather than filling shelves, you can afford to keep saying no until something clears all four tests.
It is slower, and it means we pass on a great deal. But it is also the reason the collection stays thoughtfully curated rather than crowded.
Why the Order Matters
The sequence is the whole point. By the time we get to something as tempting as a beautiful color, a piece has already proven it is distinctive, enduring, and genuinely useful.
It is a discipline that occasionally means walking away from a bag we love. But it is also why the pieces that make it through tend to become the ones our customers reach for the most.
